Fixed signs in astrology: what the three modes say about you

With the zodiac signs, the first thing you learn is almost always the four elements. Fire, earth, air and water tell you what a sign is made of. Beside them stands a second division that is explained far more rarely and that still makes a great deal clearer: the mode. It does not describe what a sign consists of, but how it works. At what pace, with what staying power, and at what point in a sequence.

Astrology knows three such modes: cardinal, fixed and mutable. Each one turns up in exactly four signs, one from each element. Because four signs always belong together, you will also come across the cumbersome word quadruplicity. The easiest way to understand the three is to read them as a sequence: something begins, something is held, something is passed on.

Cardinal: the impetus

Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn each stand at the beginning of a season. Their mode is the start. Setting a direction, opening a conversation, pushing a plan off the desk and out into the world. Anyone with a lot of cardinal positions reacts quickly, often before everything has been thought through to the end, turning outwards as they do so. Keeping going is harder, once the first stimulus has worn off and the matter turns into routine.

Fixed: holding, condensing, building up

Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius sit in the middle of a season, where it is at its most pronounced. High summer belongs to Leo, the depth of winter to Aquarius. That is exactly what the fixed mode is about: not beginning, but condensing. What has been started is given a form here, a duration and a settled place. Fixed signs build up, tend, repeat and stay.

In everyday life you recognise this mode by its reliability. Someone with a fixed emphasis keeps their word and stays in a company, a friendship, a project, even when it becomes hard work. They do not need constant variety to keep at the matter in hand. This tenacity has a flip side. Anyone that steady finds it difficult to let go of an opinion once it has been formed. Something new rarely feels like an opportunity at first, more like a looming loss. Fixed natures need time and a reason that genuinely convinces them, but then they carry a decision further than anyone else.

Mutable: distributing and passing on

Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces each end a season and lead into the next. Their part is redistribution: explaining, translating, mediating, adapting. They take what is finished and set it moving again, take it apart, hand it on. That is why they seem flexible and sometimes erratic. Committing themselves is not much to their taste, but they cope with detours and last-minute changes of plan better than any other group.

Reading element and mode together

Only the combination of the two makes a sign unmistakable. Taurus and Scorpio are both fixed, yet one holds on to property, body and habit, the other to feelings and attachments. Leo and Aquarius are fixed as well and could hardly come across more differently, because fire wants to show itself and air defends an idea. Finding your own mix

Your sun sign supplies only part of the answer. In a birth chart the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars and the remaining planets are in signs as well, and the ascendant comes on top of that. Take your time and count how your positions are spread across cardinal, fixed and mutable. Usually one of them clearly predominates, and that explains more about your pace than any list of character traits.

None of these three modes is better than the others. Every undertaking needs someone to set it going, someone to carry it through the tough middle stretch, and someone to get it out to people at the end. Once you know which part comes easily to you, you also know who you could do with at your side for the rest.
