Health horoscope: what it contains and what does not belong in it

Under the heading of the health horoscope you find very different things on the internet: harmless everyday tips, the serious doctrine of temperaments, and unfortunately also texts that act as though a diagnosis could be read off a planetary position. To be clear from the outset: diagnoses cannot be read off planetary positions. Anyone with symptoms belongs in a doctor's surgery, whatever any text may say. Everything else on this page takes that as given.

That leaves the question of what such a text is actually about. You do best to start where the birth chart speaks of the body and of daily life.

Where the chart speaks of the body

Classically the subject is spread over several areas. The first house describes what you arrive in the world with: build, bearing, first reaction. The sixth house is the true area of everyday life: work, routine, care, everything that recurs. The twelfth house covers what happens without an audience: withdrawal, exhaustion, recovery. In the tradition the eighth house counted as the house of death; in present-day accounts it has become the area of crises and turning points.

The distribution alone is worth noting. Health does not sit in one place in this system; it breaks down into disposition, habit, recovery and crisis. That is a useful observation, quite apart from whether you care to follow the interpretation of the individual houses.

The sixth house: the power of repetition

Most of the substance sits in the sixth house, because it deals with what you do three hundred times a year. When you eat, and whether you are sitting down while you do it. Whether your working day has breaks or only interruptions. Whether exercise is an appointment for you or a by-product of the day.

That sounds unspectacular, and that is exactly the point. What shapes your condition over the years is rarely the large decisions; it is the small routine actions you long ago stopped registering as a decision at all. A health text that does not touch this level talks past your everyday life, however finely it may be phrased.

Where this house lies says something too. It sits between the fifth, the area of pleasure, and the seventh, the area of the settled bond. Habit sits exactly in between: voluntary enough for you to change it, binding enough to carry you when the inclination is missing.

A disposition is not a diagnosis

The commonest confusion in this field concerns the difference between disposition and illness. That someone tends to work straight past warning signals is a statement about behaviour. That someone ought to spare a particular organ would be a medical statement, and that is not to be had by astrological means.

The difference is not hair-splitting. It decides whether a text does you good or harm. A description of your habits is something you can test, confirm or throw out. A pronouncement about your body you can only believe or fear.

Body and soul, without blame

In older texts you often read that mental strain is the cause of most illnesses. That sentence is too coarse and, at worst, cruel, because it makes the ill responsible for their illness. What holds is the more cautious and far more useful version: lasting tension, too little sleep and constant overload do tell on the body, and nobody withstands them indefinitely. An astrological reading can name the conditions under which you regularly end up in that state. It explains no illness by doing so, at most a circumstance that can come before one.

Three layers you should keep apart

Read a health text with these glasses on and you see within two minutes what you are dealing with. If nothing is left standing once the first and the third layer have been struck out, there was nothing there.

How to make the text usable

Take every statement and turn it into a question to yourself. A claim about the way you handle your own limits then becomes the question of when you last let a break go and why. A notebook kept for four weeks does more for you here than any reading. And anything that hurts, drags on or worries you belongs in a doctor's surgery and not in a horoscope.
