The year of the Horse

Since the Spring Festival in February 2026 the current Chinese year has borne the name of the Horse; in February 2027 it gives the name back. During that time the animal stands not for people but for a period of time. A year sign is therefore a different thing from a birth sign, even when both mean the same animal – and most of the misunderstandings around Chinese New Year come from confusing the two.

How a year comes by its name

A Chinese year carries a name in two parts: a heavenly stem, which contributes one of the phases, and an earthly branch, which in the West is known as an animal. The current year is therefore called Fire Horse. The branch on its own comes round every twelve years; the two together only after sixty.

So anyone reading a horoscope “for the year of the Horse” is not reading about people who are horses, but about the stretch of the year that bears the name. The two coincide only for those being born right now. Just where the changeover falls is no small matter: it does not land on the Western start of the year, and on this point the methods of reckoning differ among themselves as well. What a yearly forecast is built from

The texts that appear at New Year follow a spare blueprint. The branch of the current year is compared with your own year branch. It can be the same one; it can stand exactly opposite it in the circle; it can belong to its group of three; or it stands in none of these relations. There are not many more cases than these, and out of them come the twelve paragraphs that can then be read everywhere – from the tabloid to the bank that likes to send its customers a tongue-in-cheek forecast at the turn of the year.

Anyone who goes about it more thoroughly sets the stem and branch of the year not against one animal but against a complete birth chart of four pillars – and then arrives at two different answers for two people born in the same year.

What a Horse year is said to bring

In substance the tradition is brief and sounds much the same every time: pace, impetus, quick decisions, plenty of movement, little patience with anything that takes a long time. Anyone who lays several such forecasts side by side finds the same four or five words again, each time dressed up differently.

You do not have to take it seriously to find it interesting. Attributions of that kind say little about the months ahead and a great deal about what a shared image brings about: millions of people line their year up on the same date and have the same name in mind for the twelve months that follow. The calendar acquires a face it would not have as a bare number, and that works whether or not anyone believes the interpretation.

If you are a Horse yourself

You can work out in one step whether this applies to you: anyone who turns twelve, twenty-four, thirty-six, forty-eight, sixty or seventy-two in 2026 was born under the sign of the Horse. Only for birthdays in January and in the first weeks of February is it worth looking at the date from which the year was counted back then.

Then the name of the year and the birth sign come together again for the first time in twelve years. Not much follows from that: a year sign gathers everyone born within twelve months, and about a single person it says roughly as much as their year of birth. As an occasion for beginning a year deliberately it serves well enough all the same – and that is more than most days in the calendar can claim for themselves.
