The star sign Pisces: soft on the surface, tough underneath

Pisces closes the zodiac. The Sun stands in this sign from about 19 February to 20 March, the dates shifting by a day from one year to the next. The sign has a reputation for being soft, and the reputation holds – what gets overlooked along with it is how much staying power someone who never fights back head-on can have.

The last sign before everything begins again

Before Pisces lies Aquarius, and after it, with Aries, the whole round starts over. This position at the end of the circle shapes the interpretation more than any list of traits: nothing new is built here, here what has left its form behind dissolves. The end of winter, the thaw, everything muddy and stirring at once.

The picture handed down shows two fish joined by a band and swimming in opposite directions. Two movements, one animal. Anyone who takes that picture seriously understands why the same sign is described sometimes as lost in dreams and sometimes as surprisingly single-minded – the two belong together and take turns.

Water, and water on the move

Pisces belongs to the element of water, together with Cancer and Scorpio. In astrology water stands for everything that takes things in, mixes them and adapts to the shape of its vessel; you will find more on this division under the four elements. To this is added the mutable mode, which Pisces shares with Gemini, Virgo and Sagittarius. Mutable signs each stand at the end of a season and are responsible for transitions, not for beginnings and not for keeping things as they are.

Water plus mutability makes for permeability. The classical rulers are Jupiter and, since its discovery in the nineteenth century, Neptune as well – the one stands for breadth, the other for the blurring of edges. Both assignments point the same way: little resistance, a great deal of surface.

How you recognise Pisces in everyday life

Not by sentences about spirituality, but by small things. Someone notices that the mood in the room has turned before a word has been said. Someone comes home exhausted from a family gathering although nothing strenuous has happened. Someone finds, for a situation that has run aground, an image that suddenly sorts everything out, where three factual arguments had shifted nothing.

This receptiveness is a genuine ability and not a pleasant character trait. It explains why many Pisces are at home in fields where the work is done with images, sounds and stories, or with people in extreme situations. What is not meant literally they often grasp faster than the literal.

Where it gets difficult: the boundary

Anyone who takes everything in has to sort out sooner or later what of it actually belongs to them. That is precisely where the sign is weak. Other people's tension becomes their own. Saying no is hard, because the other person's disappointment can already be felt before it arrives. Instead of a conflict there is an evasive manoeuvre, and instead of a refusal a delay.

With money the same pattern shows up in figures. Amounts stay abstract as long as they are only there on a screen, and a spontaneous act of generosity feels more right in the moment than any plan. What helps here is unromantic and works all the same: fixed standing orders, a separate account for the regular outgoings, one figure a month that is not open to negotiation. With Pisces, structure from outside does not replace self-discipline – it makes it unnecessary.

In relationships and at work

In relationships Pisces need someone across from them who says what they mean. Hints do get read, and thoroughly, often with more meaning read into them than they carry. Clear sentences do not come across as hard here, but as a relief. The other way round, it is worth it for Pisces to name a wish outright instead of hoping it will be guessed.

In working life it is not so much the field that decides as the rhythm. Days timed through to the last quarter of an hour cost a disproportionate amount of energy. A firm frame with some air in it, by contrast, works well, especially when the work has a point that can be seen. Pisces rarely work against a task; they work with it, as long as they understand it.

A sun sign is one twelfth
