Profession and vocation in the chart

The question of profession is one of the oldest in astrology, and the tradition has a fully worked-out procedure for it. It also has clear ideas about what that procedure can deliver.

What the disposition for a profession is judged from

Three factors together, not one:

• The tenth house and its ruler — the office, the standing, the visible side of the work.
• The significator of the work. The classical rule: the planet that rises heliacally first after the Sun — that is, the first to become visible ahead of the Sun in the morning sky. Often the strongest planet at the midheaven will do instead.
• The condition of both. A strong significator promises standing in what it stands for; a weak one promises the same direction without the means to fill it out.

What the planets indicate

The attributions are old, and the sources agree on them:

• Mercury — writing, calculation, trade, mediation, teaching.
• Venus — design, ornament, music, everything meant to please.
• Mars — tool and weapon, fire and iron, surgery, everything that separates.
• Jupiter — law, teaching, administration, clerical office.
• Saturn — land and soil, building, mining, what is slow and lasting.
• The Sun — leadership, office, public standing.
• The Moon — the crowd, circulation, care, everything that has to do with the many.

Connections between them shift the picture: Mercury with Mars points to precision with a sharp tool, Venus with Mercury to shaping handwork or trade in beautiful things.

What a chart does not name

A profession.

It names a kind of work — with language, with tools, with people, with material. Which particular profession comes of that depends on time, place, training and opportunity. The same Mercury-Mars connection gives a barber-surgeon in the fifteenth century and today perhaps a dental technician or a programmer.

A reading that names a particular profession is either lucky or working from prior knowledge. That is not an objection to the technique — it is a description of what the technique does.

The question of timing

The timing techniques show when a disposition unfolds: profections, directions, the yearly horoscope. The rule holds here too — what only a single technique shows is not reported.
