Sagittarius: what Jupiter and Mercury do in this sign

Anyone who reads about Sagittarius almost always gets a list of character traits. Astrology itself goes about it the other way round: it looks first at which planets can work well in a sign and which cannot. For Sagittarius — the Sun moves in around 22 November and out again around 21 December — that comes to two entries, from which almost everything else follows. Jupiter is at home here. Mercury is in detriment.

What being at home and in detriment mean

Each of the twelve signs has a planet assigned to it, its ruler. In its own sign a planet can do what it stands for without hindrance. In the sign opposite, its detriment, it has to work with material that is foreign to it. No judgement is implied in that: a planet in detriment is not malevolent, it is lodged in the wrong place.

Sagittarius adds a peculiarity of its own. It is one of the four signs to which the classical scheme assigns neither an exaltation nor a fall; the other three are Gemini, Leo and Aquarius. Jupiter and its second sign

Jupiter is not responsible for Sagittarius alone. In the classical scheme every planet apart from the Sun and the Moon was given two signs, and Jupiter's second is Pisces. Sagittarius counts as its day sign and Pisces as its night sign, and the difference can be read off the result: the same inclination to set the limits wider becomes direction and departure in fire, and compassion and dissolution in water.

That comparison says more about Sagittarius than ten adjectives. What is ascribed to the sign — confidence, breadth, the question of what a matter is actually good for — does not come from twelve different sources but from this one, which meets no resistance here.

Mercury in detriment, the more interesting entry

Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo; in Sagittarius and in Pisces it stands in detriment, opposite one of its own signs in each case. What it is responsible for is distinguishing: measuring, naming, checking, finding the exact word, telling two similar cases apart.

In Sagittarius this work finds poor soil. Not because intelligence is lacking — the tradition nowhere claims that — but because the sign is intent on the connection between things and the particular slips through on the way. In everyday life it looks like this: the principle is grasped after two minutes, the concrete case goes unchecked. The summary is right, the figure inside it is not. “Broadly speaking” comes at the start of the reasoning instead of at its end.

The opposite sign is part of it

That it should be Mercury's sign of all signs that lies opposite Sagittarius is no accident of the scheme but the principle it is built on: a planet's detriment is always the sign opposite its own. For Sagittarius that means it can fetch from there what it lacks by nature — and not as work on character, but quite concretely. A deadline, a figure, a name, a sheet of paper saying what exactly was agreed.

The same holds the other way round. A detriment points to a division of labour, not to a defect. Demanding of a Sagittarius the fine detail work that others are at home in wears on the nerves of both sides. Letting a Sagittarius set the frame and someone else check the column costs nobody anything.

Where your two planets actually stand

All of this describes a sign, not yet a person. Whether Mercury really is in Sagittarius in your chart is something your date of birth does not tell you: Mercury always stays close to the Sun, but does not necessarily land in the same sign. Anyone with the Sun in Sagittarius has Mercury in Scorpio, in Sagittarius or in Capricorn — and a Mercury in Capricorn works considerably more precisely than the short description suggests.
