Why a reading feels accurate

People often recognise themselves with startling accuracy in an astrological reading written about them. That is a real experience, and it has several causes. Knowing them is useful to anyone who has anything to do with astrology — to those who practise it as much as to those who consult them.

The Barnum effect

The best known mechanism, and a well studied one. Statements that fit almost everyone are experienced as an accurate personal description — especially when they are built out of opposing pairs.

“They seem sure of themselves from the outside, but inwardly they doubt more than others suspect.” That is true of almost everyone. In the classic experiments every participant received the same description, and most of them rated it as precisely tailored to them.

Popular horoscopes consist almost entirely of sentences like that one.

Confirmation bias

Anyone who reads a statement about themselves looks through their own life for evidence that fits — and finds some, because a life yields enough material for any claim whatever. The counter-examples are not looked for, and so they go unnoticed.

This is not credulity but the ordinary working of memory, and it cannot be switched off.

What the person coming for a reading contributes

In a consultation, more than either side is aware of. They nod, they hesitate, they tell a story. A practised person adjusts the reading to all of that without intending to.

In the end the person who came for the reading experiences an accuracy that they themselves did much to produce.

What follows from this

Not that astrology is nothing. What follows is that the feeling of being accurately described is not evidence. It arises just as readily from a careful reading as from a text handed out at random.

For honest practice that means three things:

Keeping statements as narrow as possible. A statement that fits everyone has said nothing. One that can turn out to be wrong is worth something.
Writing them down in advance. Anyone who wants to test whether a technique holds up formulates the statement before the answer is known. In horary astrology that takes only days.
Showing the reasoning. Which placement does the statement follow from? A reading whose reasoning is on show can be disputed — and only that makes it testable.

Anyone who keeps to these three points makes life harder for themselves, and the matter better for it.
