The star sign Sagittarius: breadth, meaning and an uncomfortable honesty

Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the zodiac. The Sun enters it in late November and leaves it at the winter solstice – in the weeks, that is, when darkness falls early and most people start thinking about the year ahead. For a sign that likes to look forward, that is not a bad place in the calendar.

Fire, mutable, Jupiter

Three details place Sagittarius, and between them they already describe the sign fairly closely.

• Fire as the element: the drive comes from enthusiasm, not from a sense of duty. Without it little happens; with it, a surprising amount.
• Mutable as the mode: the sign closes a season and is free to change direction along the way without feeling that it has failed.
• Jupiter as the ruler: the need for an overview, and for an answer to the question of what the whole thing is supposed to be good for.

How you recognise a Sagittarius

Most reliably not by wanderlust, but by the questions. Why do we do it this way? What is supposed to come of it in the end? This sign copes well with effort as long as the effort leads somewhere; it loses patience with tasks whose purpose nobody can explain to it.

Learning happens on the move here: in conversation, on the road, by trying things out. Added to that is a generosity that keeps no accounts, with time, with money and with trust. Anyone in an awkward spot is more likely to get an offer here than a verdict.

Straight talk and its price

The reputation for being uncomfortably honest is deserved. “I just say what I think” is among the sentences heard most often from this sign, and it is meant seriously: to a Sagittarius, pretence looks like a form of rudeness.

The intention, however, is not what decides the effect. An accurate observation at the wrong moment stays accurate and is still of no use to anyone. The difference between open and inconsiderate lies rarely in the content and almost always in whether the other person can do anything with it just then.

Where it tips over

The difficulties of this sign nearly all come out of the same movement: it takes on too much. Projects that have been started pile up, commitments do too, and the calendar is made for someone with twice the stamina.

Then there is the tendency to lecture: an overview easily turns into insisting on being right, and a conviction into a talk that no longer takes questions. And there are the promises that were entirely serious at the moment they were made and later founder on the week in which they would have to be kept.

What helps against that is not less breadth. It is a project large enough to stay interesting over months, and a few people who ask kindly what became of the idea from last spring.

The bow and the view outwards

The sign is depicted as an archer, in most traditions as a creature that is half horse. The picture is apt: the gaze goes far beyond what lies within reach, and yet this creature stands on the ground on four legs.

In the direction of the constellation of the same name lies the centre of our galaxy; the band of the Milky Way is particularly dense there. In our latitudes it can be seen in the short nights of summer, low over the southern horizon. In December this constellation stands too close to the Sun to be visible.

What the sign needs

Room, a goal at a reasonable distance and company that can take contradiction. Anyone who wants to keep a Sagittarius gives them something to do that is bigger than the coming month.
