Venus

In the classical ordering Venus is the lesser benefic — fortuna minor. Jupiter is the greater; Venus works at closer range, smaller and more personal.

What it means

Affection, measure, pleasure, agreement. Everything that joins without forcing: ornament, music, design, peace, the agreeable.

It rules Taurus and Libra, is exalted in Pisces at 27 degrees, in detriment in Aries and Scorpio, in fall in Virgo at 27 degrees.

The Pisces–Virgo opposition is telling: Venus is strong where things are dissolved and joined, and weak where they are distinguished and tested. That describes its nature better than any list of traits.

Sect and visibility

Venus belongs to the night sect. In a night birth it stands in its better condition.

It is either a morning or an evening star and never moves more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. The tradition distinguishes the two phases: as an evening star it is held to suit the night sect better.

Where the popular reading becomes too narrow

Today Venus is tied almost exclusively to love relationships. That is only part of the picture.

In the tradition it stands just as much for the craft of the beautiful, for the contract — any agreement, not only the marital one — for ornament, music and fragrance. In a question about profession a strong Venus points to work that gives form, not to a successful private life.

The benefic planet in poor condition

One point the tradition states plainly: a benefic in poor condition does not turn malefic, but it does not deliver what it promises.

A Venus in fall, combust, in a cadent house describes affection that does not arrive; agreements that do not hold; taste without means. That is something other than hostility — and in interpretation an important difference.
