Typology of the zodiac signs: how three building blocks become twelve characters

A typology is nothing mysterious. It is an attempt at order: one takes a few features that can be told cleanly apart, combines them and looks at the patterns that come out. Astrology has been doing this for a very long time, and it arrives at twelve types, all of which you know by the names of the zodiac signs.

It only becomes interesting when you do not stop at the names but ask how these twelve types come about. They arise from three building blocks, and once you have grasped those, you no longer need to learn lists of traits by heart.

Three building blocks make twelve combinations

The first building block is the element: fire, earth, air or water. The second is the mode, sometimes also called the quality: cardinal, fixed or mutable. Four times three makes twelve, and each of these combinations occurs in the zodiac exactly once. There is only one fixed fire sign, only one cardinal water sign, only one mutable earth sign. That is where this division gets its sharpness: no sign can be confused with another, because no two occupy the same combination.

The third building block is the planet assigned to the sign. It gives the combination a signature. Some planets rule two signs, and the results still sound very different: Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo – both mutable, but one an air sign and the other an earth sign. Venus rules Taurus and Libra, which differ in both of the remaining building blocks at once.

The element describes the raw material

Fire means drive and radiance, earth the tangible and patience, air distance and language, water permeability and memory. All of this is set out at greater length under the four elements.

The mode describes the movement

The modes are tied to the seasons. Cardinal signs stand at the beginning of one: they open, they give the push, they take the first move. Fixed signs stand in the middle, where a season is wholly itself: they hold, they preserve, they give way reluctantly. Mutable signs stand at the transition, where the next one is already showing through: they mediate, they adapt, they keep several possibilities open.

The ruler sets the tone

Mars sounds different from Venus, Saturn different from Jupiter. You can read what each planet stands for under the planets. For the typology one rule of thumb is enough for now: the ruler says by what means a sign goes about a matter.

The twelve combinations in brief

• Aries, cardinal fire under Mars: starts before the plan is finished. Direct, impatient with detours.
• Taurus, fixed earth under Venus: needs a pace of its own. Sensuous, dependable, hard to talk round.
• Gemini, mutable air under Mercury: lives on asking. Nimble, gifted with words, holds several threads at once.
• Cancer, cardinal water under the Moon: creates sheltered spaces. Takes in moods and forgets nothing.
• Leo, fixed fire under the Sun: shows itself. Generous, warm, reliant on a response.
• Virgo, mutable earth under Mercury: improves. Exact, practical, sees the fault first.
• Libra, cardinal air under Venus: looks for the balance. Weighs both sides, turned towards the other, now and then undecided for too long.
• Scorpio, fixed water under Mars and Pluto: goes deep. Persistent, distrustful of surfaces.
• Sagittarius, mutable fire under Jupiter: looks for the wide view. Easily fired up, inclined to overshoot.
• Capricorn, cardinal earth under Saturn: builds to last. Serious, resilient, measures itself by the result.
• Aquarius, fixed air under Saturn and Uranus: thinks from first principles. Headstrong, unimpressed by authority.
• Pisces, mutable water under Jupiter and Neptune: permeable to everything around. Compassionate, has to draw its boundaries deliberately.

What a typology can do and what it cannot

Such short portraits describe a leaning, not a behaviour. Two people with the same sun sign can be completely unlike each other, because in each of them the Moon, the ascendant and the position of the remaining planets come in as well. The sun sign is one factor among many, though a clearly audible one.

Lists that assign a single trait to each sign are fun, but they turn the matter on its head: they begin with the label and then look for somebody to fit it. The route through the building blocks works the other way round. You look at element, mode and ruler, and from them you work out which reaction is the likely one.

How to use the typology day to day

You get the most out of it when you take it as a language for describing and not as a judgement. It helps you put into words why certain ways of working tire you and others do not, why one sort of person reliably irritates you and another calms you down.
