Horoscope and partnership: not just love

In astrology, partnership means more than love. What is meant is a structure: two names, one agreement, two minds of their own. Marriage falls under it, so does setting up a company with someone else — and so does the other side in a lawsuit. That is not carelessness on the part of the tradition, it is its most interesting observation.

One place for everything that takes two

The seventh house of the chart draws together what everyday life carefully keeps apart: the spouse, the business partner, the counterparty to a contract, the declared adversary, and with them anyone who acts as a representative — solicitor, broker, agent. To modern ears that is strange company.

What holds them together is not the feeling but the kind of tie. In every one of these cases someone enters into a bond with you that neither of you inherited: you are not related, you chose each other, and you can dissolve the matter again. That is exactly what sets these relations apart from parents and siblings, which stand in quite another place in the chart. Whether an agreement turns into a long marriage or into a lawsuit is decided by the course it takes — the structure is the same in both cases.

A second distinction belongs here, because it often gets blurred: what is meant is the open adversary, the one who stands opposite with a name and an address. What is covert is dealt with elsewhere in the tradition. A declared adversary is no misfortune in this order; he is a counterpart like any other, only with an opposing interest.

The same pattern in love and in business

From this follows a rule of interpretation that can be checked: anyone who in private life keeps running into people who lay down the law negotiates along a related pattern over the tenancy agreement, in the club and with the business partner as well. Not identical — but recognisable enough to be noticed as soon as the cases are laid side by side.

Laying them side by side takes no calculation at all, and that way round is the more honest one. Write down the five most binding two-person arrangements of your life: relationships, contracts, joint undertakings, plus the two disputes that have cost you most. If two lines say the same thing, you have your theme, and you have it documented. A chart can name such a pattern before it happens for the third time. It cannot spare you the list.

Where the old books promised too much

The older literature derived from this area what the future spouse looks like, where he comes from and what he does for a living. Instructions of that kind are set out at length in the sources, and they are one reason why this part of astrology in particular has a doubtful reputation: no one has ever checked them with a usable result. A birth chart describes how someone commits — not to whom.

A moment in time is not to be found there either. When two people meet depends on two life histories and on a thousand circumstances that appear in neither of the two charts. And the sentence “That is just how it is with me” is not information from the chart but a retreat: a description names an inclination; what you do with it remains your own affair.

When a commitment is coming up

Flatshare, firm or marriage: the astrological part describes inclinations, the rest is craft. Three questions are useful, and they are better asked before things turn unpleasant. What belongs to both, what to each alone? Who decides when the two of you cannot agree? And what does an end look like that ruins neither of you?

A chart can tell you which of these three questions you find hardest, going by experience — and that is worth more than it sounds, because that is exactly the one that gets skipped. Answering it is something you have to do with the other person. How a birth chart is put together in the first place is set out under Horoscopes; you will find the signs one after another under Zodiac signs.
