The horse in the Chinese zodiac

The horse is the seventh of the twelve animals in the Chinese cycle. Anyone who only wants to know whether they are one looks at the year of birth: 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026. One caveat goes with that, because the Chinese year does not begin on 1 January; how the years are assigned is set out on the page on Chinese astrology. The more interesting question is the second one anyway: why is it this sign of all of them that is said to have speed, charm and restlessness? Almost everything that is told about the horse can be derived from its place in the calendar.

Its place in the cycle

The horse, Wu in Chinese, is the seventh earthly branch. High summer belongs to it, as do the noon hour from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the compass direction south and the fire phase; it is a yang sign. As a month sign it covers roughly the stretch from early June to early July. These details are not decoration, they are the source of the whole picture.

Noon and high summer

Picture the moment when the Sun stands at its highest. Nothing lies in shadow, the warmth is at its peak. That is exactly where the horse sits, at the summit of the day as of the year, at the far edge of yang. And because it is the summit, the second thing holds as well: from here the way leads down.

Then there is fire, the only one of the five phases that consumes fuel for as long as it burns. It gives light and warmth, it draws every eye, and it needs feeding. The picture of the horse is built out of that combination, long before anyone made a character trait of it.

The portrait and its other side

The horse is credited with speed, enthusiasm and a presence that is noticed at once in a crowded room. It gets into conversation with people quickly, it likes to talk and talks easily, and it rubs off on others. In groups it often takes on, without planning to, the role of the one who sets the mood.

The other side belongs to that same picture, not somewhere beside it. What needs a great deal of fuel is forever looking for more: new plans, new places, new faces. Stamina over long, unspectacular stretches does not count as this sign's strength. And it carries a contradiction around with it that the tradition names openly: the wish to belong and the fear of being held fast, both equally strong. Anyone who has a horse in their life knows the pattern: closeness yes, fence no.

Allies and the opposite sign

Of the connections the cycle sets up between the animals, two concern the horse above all. It stands in one group with the tiger and the dog, and these three are said to share a keynote: setting off, courage, a leaning towards open commitment.

And opposite it stands the rat. Midnight against noon, water against fire, the hidden against the visible. In practice an opposition like this is not an incompatibility but a tension: the rat plans quietly, the horse sets off at a run. Both arrive, only by opposite routes.

Not every horse is a fire horse

Every animal comes in five versions, depending on which phase the year of birth brings with it. An earth horse, a metal horse and a water horse are not the same sign under a different label, but three different mixtures. The case held to be especially pronounced is the one in which the year contributes the same phase the branch already carries: fire on fire, with nothing to damp it. That happens every sixty years, most recently in 1966 and again in 2026.

A stubborn superstition has attached itself to that year in Japan, and in 1966 the number of births there fell visibly. That says a great deal about what people make of omens, and nothing about the people born in that year.

What the year animal can do

Everything set out here hangs on a single detail: the year of birth. That is the crudest pigeonhole the system has to offer, about as precise as the sun sign on its own in Western astrology.
