Capricorn man and Capricorn woman: what the sign describes

People look up the Capricorn man and the Capricorn woman separately, as though they were two signs. In the chart they are not: the Sun in Capricorn describes the same thing in you as it does in your brother. What differs is what other people read into it — and it differs so reliably that it is worth talking about.

What the sign is credited with

The Sun reaches Capricorn at the winter solstice, on 21 or 22 December, and moves on only in the third week of January. The sign belongs to the element earth and to Saturn, the planet of long deadlines.

Hence the usual portrait. A Capricorn takes obligations seriously and keeps commitments even once they have become inconvenient. Affection is shown rarely in words and often in actions: the tyre has been changed, the forms have been filled in, someone is standing at the station at six in the morning. Money is handled carefully, not out of meanness, but because savings mean peace of mind. And a Capricorn mistrusts big announcements, their own first of all.

The chart records no gender

A birth chart contains signs, houses and planetary positions. Whether the person who goes with it is a man or a woman is nowhere in it, nor can it be worked out from it. Anyone who lays two charts with the Sun in Capricorn side by side will find plenty of differences, but they lie with the Moon, with Venus, with the ascendant and with the houses.

Tradition does know masculine and feminine signs, but it means something other than what the word suggests today: a division into acting and receiving that alternates all the way round the circle. Capricorn falls on the feminine side of it. That sentence never appears in any description of the Capricorn man — and it would not be a statement about him anyway, but about an ancient scheme of order.

Why the same trait sounds different

The same reserve is called self-possession in him and coldness in her. The same ambition is called drive in him and doggedness in her. The same sparing use of praise sounds like leadership in one case and like coldness in the other.

In practice this means that Capricorn women meet resistance for a trait that earns Capricorn men approval, and they learn early to expect it. If you recognise yourself in the portrait but not in its tone, that is often the reason, and not you.

What the older textbooks read separately

A reading split by gender did exist in astrology, only it never concerned the sun sign. In the older literature, Venus in a man's chart was read as a pointer to the women who attract him, and Mars in a woman's chart in the same way. Many astrologers no longer use this assignment; they read both planets the same way in everyone, as two ways of entering into a relationship.

In love, the beginning takes time

A Capricorn weighs things up, keeps a distance, comes across cooler than they feel, and then decides more or less for good. Anyone hoping for a quick commitment takes that for indifference; often it is the opposite, namely the caution of someone for whom a promise is binding. The double reading applies here too: in men this hesitation is called self-possession, in women aloofness. The same behaviour, two vocabularies.

The reliability trap

Reliable people are given more to do. That is the working life of many Capricorns: because the job reaches them and gets finished, the next one follows at once, and at some point half a department depends on one person who has never said no. There is an extra here as well: anyone who is credited with being caring in the first place is handed, on top of that, the tasks that nobody counts.

A test sentence for any description of this kind

Next time you read a text about the Capricorn woman or the Capricorn man, swap the gender as you go. If the sentence still stands, it describes the sign. If it turns odd, then it never described Capricorn, but an expectation of men or of women. A surprising amount fails this test.
