Why star signs lend themselves to anything

There are star sign lists for underwear, for pets, for holiday destinations, for types of coffee. They all work, and it is worth understanding why — because the reason says something about the limits of popular astrology.

The method

Take any field with enough variants in it. Assign the twelve signs so that the broad clichés fit: the eye-catching to Aries, the cosy to Taurus, the tidy to Virgo, the dark to Scorpio.

The result feels coherent. It always feels coherent, whatever the field.

Why it always works

Two reasons, and both are well studied.

The assignment cannot be tested. There is no way of establishing whether red really does belong to Aries. A claim that cannot be wrong never feels wrong.

The descriptions are wide enough. “They like their comfort, but for special occasions something more elaborate is allowed” fits almost everyone. That is the Barnum effect, and it carries the whole genre. See why a reading feels accurate.

What this has to do with astrology

Less than the name suggests — and that is the point.

Such lists use nothing but the sun sign, that is, the position of a single planet, with no ascendant, no houses, no condition of any planet at all. Of the astrological craft they use precisely nothing except the twelve names.

That is no reason for outrage — it is entertainment, and harmless as such. It is a reason not to treat them as evidence, though, in either direction: that an underwear list gets it wrong says as little about astrology as its getting it right.
